Job Term: Temporary – recurring seasonal contracts every year for up to 26 weeks per year (May to November). As well as 30 weeks per year (April to November).

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must be fluent and know the English Language.

Education: Candidates do not require standard educational qualifications such as high school, a bachelor’s degree, a certificate, or a diploma.

Experience: As a candidate, you will need experience completing basic grounds/facilities maintenance and minor repairs. This is coupled with an ability to use small hand-held tools (drills, hammers, paint equipment, cleaning equipment) and grounds maintenance equipment (rake, shovel, lawnmower, weed whip, chainsaw, lawnmower).

Other Requirements:

  • The candidate should have a valid class G driver’s license or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver’s license upon being hired.
  • The candidate should have the ability to be designated as a Park Warden meet ministry certification criteria and standards in the use of force and work shifts, weekends, and statutory holidays as required
  • The candidate should have a working knowledge of resource management principles and practices applicable to Parks be knowledgeable about law enforcement and possess the ability to interpret, apply, and enforce relevant acts and regulations
  • The candidate should know of, and have an ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and directives such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) guidelines and know about parks programs, services, and operating regulations
  • The candidate should have the ability to operate a variety of office equipment and have interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively and to provide park information to stakeholders
  • The candidate should have written communication skills to produce reports and correspondence, have demonstrated leadership skills to work in a team and provide guidance to staff, and have organizational skills and the ability to work independently and follow and carry out instructions

Responsibilities Of A Park Ranger

Park rangers are in charge of protecting the forest, plant life in the park, wildlife, and lots more. They are also responsible for keeping visitors safe and ensuring they are law-abiding. Furthermore, to become a successful park ranger, you will have to be passionate about protecting and preserving nature.

A park ranger’s responsibilities include the following:

  • Protecting wildlife, plant life, and other aspects of nature from humans and other natural occurrences. Essentially, they carry out environmental conservation in the park.

  • Educating people on fire safety laws and helping enforce them to prevent incidents.
  • Serving as tour guides in the park, showing people around and educating them on the environment, local wildlife, landmarks’ historical and cultural relevance, etc.
  • Working in the visitor center of a park or site, thus, providing information to hikers, campers, etc.
  • Acting as first responders in case of an emergency in their jurisdiction. If required, they can contact the local authorities. In the event of a missing person, park rangers organize search and rescue missions, applying their knowledge of the terrain to bring them back.
  • Carrying out administrative tasks, including taking logs, reporting incidents, recording visitor details, etc.
  • Maintaining the park’s indoor and outdoor quality by removing litter, clearing trails, and protecting artifacts, among others.
