Overview
Languages: French
Education: College, CEGEP, or other non-university certificate. Must possess a diploma from a program of one year to two years, or its equivalent.
Experience: one to less than seven months.
Credentials
Certificates, licenses, memberships, and courses: FAA-approved commercial pilot’s license and special rating certifications are required. As well as the transport Canada flight instructor rating. Private Pilot and Commercial Pilot Licence – ultra-light airplane.

Duties And Responsibilities
You will need to provide flight instruction according to the Select Aviation College syllabus.
Also, check weather conditions and NOTAMS before flights.
In addition, you must ensure proper preparation of aircraft and students.
Brief students before and after each flight.
Comply with the company’s operations manual.
Complete the flight portion of the PTRs.

Required Qualifications And Expertise
High school diploma with Airline Transport Pilot certificate.
Class 4, 3, 2, or 1 instructor rating issued by Transport Canada.
Be able to show enthusiasm to evolve within the college team.
Show professional behavior.
You must have passed the job interview, exams, and the qualification flight with the chief flight instructor.
Working Conditions
The flight instructor’s schedule is established by the operations team according to the availability allocated by the instructor. You may be called upon to work for days, evenings, or even on weekends. However, it will depend on the phase of the student’s training and the weather conditions.

Class 4 Flight Instructor
Requirements
- CPL or ATPL
- 25 hours of ground school
- 30 hours of dual flight instruction, which includes 5 hours on how to teach instrument skills. 5 of these hours can be on an approved FTD.
- 70% on the Transport Canada written exam [AIRAF]
- Pass a flight test
Flight Test Admissions
Requirements for admission to the instructor flight test include the following. Scroll down!
- Your photo ID with signature
- Valid medical certificate
- As well as a valid commercial pilot license
- Letter of recommendation within the last 30 days AND signed by a Class 1 Instructor
- Demonstrate that you passed the AIRAF with 70% or greater in the previous 24 months
- A signed PTR displaying the required training
Privileges
With a Class 4 Instructor Rating, you can train students for:
- recreational pilot permits
- pilot licenses
- night ratings and VFR OTT ratings

- give recommendations for night ratings and VFR OTT ratings
- authorize student solos
- recommend students for airplane rec permit and pilot licenses
IMPORTANT: You must be under the supervision of a Class 1 or 2 flight instructor. Before sending students solo or for a flight test, they must have undergone a progress check ride with your supervising instructor. You will also need to keep a detailed record of your flight training as an instructor.
Validity: 12 months
Class 3 Flight Instructor
Requirements
- Hold a Class 4 Flight Instructor rating
- Have flown 100 hours with students towards a pilot license
- Furthermore, you must have a record of student training which shows that you have sent 3 students for solo flights and have recommended 3 students for flight tests. However, they must have passed and spent at least 5 of the last 10 training hours with the aforementioned students.
- NO flight test is required.
Privileges
With a Class 3 Instructor Rating you
- have the same privileges as a Class 4, but without supervision
- can act as Chief Pilot
Validity: 24 months
Class 2 Flight Instructor
Requirements
- Hold a Class 3 Flight Instructor rating
- Score 70% on the AIRAT (within the preceding 24 months)
- You must have 500 hours of flight training experience, with 10 recommendations for flight tests and 400 hours of flight training toward a pilot license.
- Pass a flight test
Privileges
With a Class 2 Instructor Rating you
- Will have the same privileges as a Class 3
- You can act as Chief Pilot
- And also supervise Class 4 instructors
Validity: 36 months
Class 1 Flight Instructor
Requirements
- Hold a Class 2 Flight Instructor rating
- Score 80% on the AIRAT (within the preceding 24 months)
- You must have 750 hours of flight training experience, with 10 recommendations for flight tests and 600 hours of flight training toward a pilot license.
- Pass a flight test
Privileges
With a Class 1 Instructor Rating you
- have the same privileges as a Class 2
- You can also act as Chief Pilot
- Likewise, you can supervise Class 4 instructors
- And can give ground/air training for the Flight Instructor Rating
